Olympics or should I say ‘Toddlympics’

Over the summer we have played various games that relate to the Olympics… I love the Olympics and Paralympics… Such inspirational people and I think it’s a really good thing to encourage children to get involved in…
Being so young, we didn’t exactly do proper sports… Just our variation of them.
All of our Toddlympics were easy to set up and we didn’t spend any money to do it either…

Rice Sock Hammer…

Playing with rice is one of our favourites and I had a sudden idea when we last played… Grabbed some of my odd socks and the kids filled them up with rice… (And emptied – and filled – and emptied – and filled haha). We saved them for a Toddlympic game…

On the grass in the garden we put some markers out and they swung them round and threw as far as they could… Between the 2 of them, Lara was always going to be the winner, so we are not having winners for our Toddlympics, they both get a medal (I cut out circles from their random drawings and paintings that I have kept)

Paper Plate Discus…

We coloured in and decorated some paper plates on a rainy spring day then later in the summer we did the same as with the rice sock hammer and threw them on the grass… Unfortunately (or fortunately for William) it was a rather windy day and William actually won at this sport!!!

Bean Bag Shot Putt…

We also love drawing on the pavement with chalk… We drew a big target on the path in different colours and used some bean bags we have as shot putts… Great fun. If you don’t have bean bags then just fill a sandwich bag with rice or lentils to use instead.

Pool Noodle Javelin…

This was a favourite although it did end up with them whacking each other and me with the pool noodles…

Running…

Very simple… We had some races! And we held up a ribbon for the finish line. William is so funny when he runs, very uncoordinated haha, but it’s all good exercise and all children love to run!

Hurdles…

William is only just mastering jumping, so our version of hurdles is just chalk lines on the path outside… But this could be done with planks of wood, sticks, anything suitable to jump over really.

Long Jump…

Again, William is only just learning how to jump so really didn’t do well at this bless him… But Lara really got the hang of running and jumping… We don’t have a sandpit to do it in, but we do have lots of rice… So I laid rice all over the floor and she ran and jumped into it and it marked where she landed 👍🏻

Roly Poly Gymnastics…

This was a good rainy day sport… We had cushions and a duvet all over the floor in the living room and they both did as many roly polys as they could… William isn’t particularly good at this yet, but he absolutely loves it and they laugh so much. It was lovely and so much fun.

Obstacle Course…

Lara loves my chalk obstacle courses… We have done it quite a few times over the summer… It can be any design you can think of… Follow the wiggly line, jump into the boxes, jump over the lines, stand in the circles in the right number order, use your left foot or right foot in the correct box, hop on one leg, run across the finish line… We don’t have enough room on our patio for this so we take it out the front on the path… The neighbours have even joined in for this one occasionally 😀

We will really enjoy watching the rest of the Olympics and the Paralympics. Lara is loving the swimming and wants to watch the ‘sand jumping’. Not sure what my favourite is, I do like the athletics, but there is so much to choose from!
