Shaving foam… Embrace the mess

I’m not one for dealing with mess very well, it’s almost an OCD kind of thing that I think is connected to my PND… Pens and crayons are a controlled item in our house and I can’t even remember the last time I let them anywhere near paint!!! I’m trying to make a conscious effort to improve how I am with mess… I’m not too bad outside now… And if something clears away easily then I cope ok with that now too… So I’m exploring ways to do messy play in the cleanest possible way…

Shaving foam has an awesome texture and sort of oozes out of your fingers if you squeeze a handful of it…

This morning I set up to play with water by putting a plastic sheet down and then a big towel over the top so our carpet doesn’t get wet… I got a plastic tub with some plastic toys…  We are using coloured unicorns… and a couple of baking tins full of water and on top of the unicorns I sprayed loads of shaving foam to hide them…  Cheap shaving foam is about £1…

The idea this morning is to try and find the unicorns using hands or spoons and then washing them in the water to clean them…

William started first and found a unicorn with his hands… He thought it was amazing, washed it and then decided he hated having shaving foam on his hands and never touched it again… He played in one of the tins of water instead, he absolutely loves playing with water… But he is going through a phase at the moment where he hates having dirty hands…

Once Lara had finished her breakfast she got straight in there with her hands… She wasn’t too keen on the shaving foam to start with and decided to use the spoon to find the unicorns… And then used her hands to wash them… After she had found a few, she started to spoon water into the foam container… And then tipped it all in… With the foam watered down she liked it alot more and got her hands in… This then progressed to pouring foamy water from one container to another, or using a tub to transfer the water…

I couldn’t actually get down on the floor and play with them as I’ve hurt my leg but I sat watching them… It entertained them for about 45 minutes! Which is pretty good going…

After lunch Lara had her friend round to play… It was such a nice day so we were in the garden all afternoon… I mixed shaving foam with a little water and some red food colouring to make some paint… Some big paint brushes and the outside Windows as the perfect canvass…. This was a MASSIVE hit… They all loved it… Played for ages and kept coming back to it… And so easy to clean away… Literally just hosed it down in a few minutes…

I’m pretty sure that shaving foam is going to make a few appearances this summer… Hopefully William will start to enjoy the mess soon too…

Ways to play

  1. Car wash/toy wash
  2. Shaving foam sensory play… Add glitter, aromatherapy oils for scent, food colouring or paint for colour, sand/rice for more texture
  3. Spread it out and write/draw in it… Can add glitter to the picture
  4. Colour it with food colouring and use as bath tub paint (check it doesn’t stain first)
  5. Put some with paint in sealed bags taped to a table or window to move around for a clean way to play… (I like clean😀)
  6. Paint with shaving foam on the window (outside is easiest to clean) add food colouring.
  7. We have some old mirrors outside that we will be trying to paint with shaving foam in the summer 😀
  8. Paint on paper with shaving foam and food colouring mixed with white glue.
  9. Add corn flour to make a dough… It’s about the same amount of each… We will be trying this sometime soon…
